Mayor: Montgomery crime at 20 year low
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)-
Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange and other city leaders are touting new figures that show crime in the state's capital city at a 20 year low.
There were a lot of high profile crimes that made headlines in 2011 including the Oak Park shootings, the Island Lounge?shootings and the shooting at an?East Montgomery postal facility, but city leaders say overall, crime statistics show a record low in criminal activity?for the 2011 calendar year.
The statistics include burglary, homicide, thefts and many other criminal acts. It's important to note that while there is a downward trend in most areas, one area saw an increase: Criminal homicides.
Last year there were 31 homicides in Montgomery, and Mayor Strange said there is a lot of work to be done to decrease that rate in 2012. Arrests have been made in 71 percent of the cases (22 of 31).
In comparison, Birmingham had 55 homicides with arrests in 38 percent of those cases.?Mobile had 37 homicides with only 21 percent resulting in arrests so far.?

Explosions in Shiite areas of Baghdad kill 27 (AP)
BAGHDAD ? A wave of explosions struck two Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 27 people and intensifying fears that insurgents are stepping up attacks after the U.S. troop withdrawal that was completed last month.
The attacks began with the explosion of a bomb attached to a motorcycle near a bus stop where day laborers gather to look for work in the Sadr city neighborhood. One of those who witnessed the attack said it filled the area with thick black smoke.
"People have real fears that the cycle of violence might be revived in this country," said Tariq Annad, a 52-year-old government employee who lives nearby.
That attack was followed by the explosion of a roadside bomb. Police found a third bomb nearby and defused it.
The two Sadr City blasts killed 12 people, according to police and medical officials.
Less than two hours later, two explosions rocked the Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah in the north of the capital, killing 15 people.
Officials said the Kazimiyah blasts occurred almost simultaneously, with at least one caused by a car bomb.
Hospital officials confirmed the causalities from the four blasts, which included more than 60 wounded.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
The Baghdad military spokesman, Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, said the aim of the attacks is "to create sedition among the Iraqi people." He said it was too early to say who was behind the bombings.
Coordinated bombings, particularly those targeting Shiite areas, are the hallmark of Sunni militants linked to al-Qaida.
Thursday's attacks were the deadliest in Baghdad since Dec. 22, when a series of blasts killed 69 people in mostly Shiite neighborhoods. An al-Qaida front group in Iraq claimed responsibility for those attacks.
Iraqi leaders have warned of a resurgence of Sunni and Shiite militants and an increase in violence following the departure of U.S. troops.
The early morning blasts followed deadly attacks Wednesday that targeted the homes of police officers and a member of a government-allied militia. Those attacks, in the cities of Baqouba and Abu Ghraib outside Baghdad, killed four people, including two children, officials said.
The latest violence comes as Iraqi politicians remain deadlocked in a festering political crisis that threatens to re-ignite simmering sectarian tensions in the country.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government, dominated by Iraq's majority Shiites, issued an arrest warrant for the country's top Sunni politician last month. The Sunni official, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, is currently holed up in Iraq's Kurdish north ? effectively out of reach of state security forces.
Al-Maliki's main political rival, the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, is boycotting parliament sessions and Cabinet meetings to protest what they say are efforts by the government to consolidate power and marginalize them.

Teen Mom 2 Recap: Holiday Joy!
Teen Mom 2 treated us to a holiday-themed episode Tuesday night. Were the kids - and their parents who are basically still kids themselves - naughty or nice?
Besides Jenelle, we mean?
For the most part, things were good. Very drama-free in certain moms' cases, less so in others. You know how they do. Let's break it down in THG's +/- recap!
No yuletide joy for Kieffer Delp, who's sitting in jail. Plus 8.

Jenelle seems to think he belongs there, which is encouraging, but quickly pivots and picks a fight with her mom. It had been like 20 minutes, might as well. Minus 7.
No one over the age of 21 will bail Kieffer out. Plus 9.
Barbara's accent, whatever it is, is beyond painful. Minus 3.
Poor Jace. Minus 7.
Barbara's boyfriend Mike to Jenelle, "You had millions of friends floating around. Now you got one guy and you're done." Millions? Slight exaggeration there Mike. But she does have 192,963 Twitter fans, which is a lot, and his point is still taken, so Plus 2.
You be good to her, Gary Head. Plus 4 out of hope.
Kailyn's "old friend" comes over to bake cookies and feed her questions and engage in totally unscripted dialogue. Tough week for the writers, apparently. Minus 6.
Nothing will compare to Cate and Tyler on Teen Mom, though. Minus 1.
"At the end of the day I'm by myself," she says, in reference to Isaac spending Christmas Eve with baby daddy Jo Rivera. Eh, enjoy a break. You earned it. Plus 8.
Besides, she's not even alone. She celebrates with her boyfriend Jordan, who sweetly tells her, "You're like a gift, to me." He's loving that IUD right now! Plus 10.
When Kailyn picks up Isaac the next day, she seeks to make peace with Jo's mom Janet, sort of apologizing in a Christmas card. A nice holiday gesture. Plus 4.
That Issac is just the cutest. Plus 5.
Corey dons a Santa suit for Ali and Aleeah, who enjoy their first birthdays and Christmases! They seem a little overwhelmed, but it's the thought that counts. Plus 3.
Leah dropping $500 on their party seems a bit over the top, although when you contrast it with The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, it's thrifty. So ... Wash.
But, as always, we are watching this from the future - this is Christmas 2010 on MTV here - and it's hard not to be sad knowing this family falls apart. Minus 12.
"It makes me feel like we actually made it. They have their mommy and daddy and it's not split. We're not having two separate parties." - Leah. See previous score.
Meanwhile, out in South Dakota, Adam gets, like, a real job (something with generators). Whatever it is, he's generating health insurance for Aubree! Plus 10.
Moreover, child support is automatically deducted from his paycheck, and he even cut down the fam's first Christmas tree. Seriously, where did Adam go? Plus 9.
Randy, Chels' dad: "He's not really held a job yet. You don't stick with somebody because you want it to work, you stick with it because it is working." Plus 11.
"Since my parents are divorced I have to celebrate Christmas twice," Chelsea whines, in a really bad attempt at guilt tripping. Minus 6.

UK "journalists' church" seeks financial suitor (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? The distinct layered spire of London's St Bride's Church, spiritual home to Britain's media and some of the leading Pilgrim Fathers, is showing its age after chunks of stone fell away from the 300-year-old structure.
St Bride's 226-foot high spire, the tallest of any Christopher Wren church and feted with having inspired the idea of multi-tiered wedding cakes, will need 2.5 million pounds ($4 million)of repairs.
"This is of one of Wren's most prominent buildings, and it is preserving his legacy as well as the stone of St Bride's that we are looking to do," James Irving, the church's director of finance, told Reuters.
Finished in 1703, some seven years before Wren's nearby masterpiece St Paul's Cathedral, the spire survived the German Luftwaffe in World War Two despite a fire-bomb which pierced the roof and set the church's interior alight.
But erosion from the weather and pollution have taken their toll as has vibration thought to have been caused by construction on the ever-changing city skyline.
Church officials are looking to the private sector for help, including donations from the media world, after failing to secure funding from heritage groups.
The church has been associated with the country's newspaper industry ever since the first printing press was set-up in its precinct in 1500, and continued after the nation's leading newspapers congregated a stone's throw away in Fleet Street.
Despite newspapers now having moved away, journalists still use the "cathedral of Fleet Street" for memorial services, Christmas carol concerts and weddings.
The former editor of the Sun tabloid newspaper Rebekah Brooks married there in 2009.
Its American connection dates back to the 16th century. The parents of Virginia Dare, the first American child of English descent, were parishioners of St Bride's, as was Edward Winslow, who became one of the leading Pilgrim Fathers, setting sail on the Mayflower in 1620.
Wren societies thrive in the U.S. unlike in Britain, where none are believed to exist.
Church restoration officials may look to the U.S. to help preserve the Grade I listed building, and some informal approaches have been made to an investment property fund as well as others, but the bulk of the funds is expected to come from its traditional Fleet Street friends.
Rupert Murdoch and his media group News Corporation, whose best-selling British newspaper the News of the World was forced to close after a phone-hacking scandal last year, have been among the most generous donors in the past.
"St Bride's has kept its relationship with what you might call Fleet Street, even though now it's a Diaspora," said Paul Finch, chairman of the appeal committee.
"It's managed to keep it going in some sense, and I think that's quite important."
The money will go toward conserving the spire's stonework and recramping as well as general church repairs and a clean-up.
The latest sizeable piece of stone fell away in September, landing on a flat roof. Nobody was injured.
St Bride's will launch its appeal in the spring, and it hopes to start on the restoration work next year.
