Solar Storm Goes Easy On Earth ? But More Are Sure To Come, NASA Says

The sun-orbiting SOHO spacecraft captured this image of filaments erupting off the sun's surface and magnetic plasma blasting into space. The field of view of this image, seen in ultraviolet light, extends some 1.243 million miles from the solar surface.

The huge solar storm that NASA detected hurtling toward Earth hit our planet at 5:42 a.m. EST Thursday. So far, there have been no reports of major power or communications disruptions. The storm's magnetic fields are oriented in a way that's "been opposite of what is needed to cause the strongest storming," says the Space Weather Prediction Center.

So, the main effect of this storm, which the AP calls the largest in five years, may only be to paint colorful auroras across the night skies above Iowa, New York and Illinois. But it's not the last you'll hear about "Solar Flares Speeding Toward Earth," as we told you yesterday. The sun is currently in a very active phase, and it won't peak until 2013, according to NASA.

This week's large solar flares, and a similar episode in late January, have sparked a lot of curiosity about the phenomena ? and led some to worry about how they might disrupt life on Earth.

NASA has uploaded an "HD closeup" version of its video of Tuesday's flares:

?

Here's how Adam Frank, of our 13.7 Cosmos and Culture blog, describes a solar flare:

"Powerful magnetic fields arc upwards from the surface, rising high into the solar atmosphere to form giant, twisting arcades of energy. Matter streams up these arches to be gripped in a magnetic vise a million miles above the surface. Then something happens. Something shifts. Magnetic lines of force in the arcade snap like steel cables on the bridge to heaven. Billions of tons of solar gas are suddenly blown outward, exploding across interplanetary space. Three days later the shimmering ball of energy smashes head-on into the unsuspecting Earth."

But Adam is quick to clarify that we earthlings are not, in fact, unsuspecting ? we're very aware of what the sun's up to. And to him, the fact that we study solar activity the way our ancestors might have noted the oceans' shifting tides means that we've arrived in a new era.

"Now we have become a high-tech, space-faring race encircling the planet's surface with power lines and its skies with orbiting satellites," he wrote.

And there lies the rub. Thanks to advances in science and technology, we're very good at detecting the ebbs and flows of the sun's 11-year activity cycle. But much of our communications and energy technology can also be devastated by the effects of a massive solar storm.

The worst-case scenario of a huge solar storm leaving "millions of people around the world without electricity, running water or phone service" isn't a matter of sci-fi conjecture ? it's a precise possibility raised by U.S. space and emergency officials, as Jon Hamilton reported in 2010.

In the government exercise, officials from the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center and the Federal Emergency Management Agency looked at how our systems might respond to a solar storm of a magnitude like those that struck the Earth in 1921 and 1859 ? events that, as Jon reported, "can release as much energy as 1 billion hydrogen bombs."

Here's what they saw in their projection models:

  • It would start with radio and GPS signals being disrupted.
  • 10-20 minutes later, most satellites that link phones, computers and TVs are knocked out.
  • One day later, the solar storm overloads high voltage power lines, destroying transformers.

The effects of what Jon called "a sort of solar Katrina" would be felt most dramatically in northern hemispheres.

As for what you might do to prepare for a potential solar calamity, FEMA's Craig Fugate recommended the standard emergency kit of water, food and first-aid supplies.

"If you've got your family disaster plan together, you've taken the steps," Fugate said, "whether it be a space storm, whether it be a system failure, whether it be another natural hazard that knocks the power out."

To clarify, those are the possibilities if we experience a category-5 solar storm. For comparison purposes, this week's solar storm has been estimated to have a rating above 1 (minor) and spiking into 3 (strong).

But NOAA uses a different measure to rate possible effects here on Earth ? the geomagnetic scale, on which this week's event rates just a 1. You can see a guide to the rating scale at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's site.

Even a small storm can cause trouble. For instance, in 1989, Canada's Hydro-Quebec power grid went off-line for more than nine hours, a disruption that was estimated to cost hundreds of millions of dollars in repairs and lost revenue.

As Adam Frank wrote in his 13.7 post back in January:

"There are other winds and other storms we must now be attentive to as we go about our business. In this way, as in so many others, our long childhood as a species has ended for better or for worse."

Romney says he's ready to fight to nomination

(AP) ? Mitt Romney said Wednesday he's "prepared to fight all the way" to become the Republican presidential nominee after a strong showing on the biggest night of the GOP presidential primary season. But Rick Santorum demonstrated enough political muscle on Super Tuesday to ensure that there's more convulsion ahead as Republicans struggle to settle on a candidate to take on President Barack Obama.

Newt Gingrich, who won only his home state of Georgia in balloting across 10 states, said he's pressing ahead and will "wait and see how the race goes."

Super Tuesday gave Romney a narrow victory in pivotal Ohio and wins in five other states, while Santorum laid claim to three states. And Rep. Ron Paul won none.

In an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box," the GOP front-runner insisted he's "getting the kind of support across the party that I need to become the nominee."

"We've got the time and the resources and a plan to get all the delegates, and we think that will get done before the convention," Romney said.

Santorum, for his part, pointed to his wins in the West, the Midwest and the South, and said: "We're ready to win across this country."

The split decision on Super Tuesday refreshed questions about Romney's appeal to conservatives in some of the most Republican states in the nation.

But Romney, the best-financed and most organized of the four Republican candidates, said he's put together the kind of campaign that can claim the nomination and "that you have to have to take on the Obama machine."

"I'm pleased it's working," he said.

Gingrich, in a morning appearance on Bill Bennett's "Morning in America" radio program, said he would have gotten out of the race if he'd lost Georgia. He also said there's no evidence Santorum could defeat Romney even in a one-on-one competition.

"If I thought he was a slam dunk to beat Romney and to beat Obama, I would really consider getting out," he said. "I don't."

House Republican Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia argued that Romney's claim to the nomination is inevitable, adding that Santorum and Gingrich "have not demonstrated an ability to do what needs to be done." But in a morning interview on CBS "This Morning," Cantor acknowledged there is still plenty of ongoing debate in "a robust party with many ideas."

Obama chose the busiest day of the GOP race to speak from the presidential bully pulpit, where he dismissed the Republicans' almost constant criticism of his administration.

"Those folks don't have a lot of responsibilities," Obama said in a White House news conference. "They're not commander in chief."

In addition to claiming Ohio, Romney scored a home-state win in Massachusetts, and triumphs in Idaho, Vermont, Alaska, and Virginia. Santorum laid claim to Oklahoma, Tennessee and North Dakota.

Gingrich's win in Georgia, which he represented for several terms in Congress, was his first victory since he captured the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21.

Paul, the veteran congressman from Texas, had pinned his hopes on winning Idaho and Alaska but fell short in both.

Ohio was the marquee matchup, and for good reason. No Republican has won the presidency without carrying the state in the general election. It was a second industrial-state showdown in as many weeks between Romney and Santorum and drew the most campaigning and television advertisements of the 10 Super Tuesday states.

With 99 percent of Ohio precincts reporting, Romney had 38 percent to Santorum's 37 percent, an uncomfortably close margin for a candidate who had spent nearly four times as much money as his rival in the state.

Romney spent $1.5 million in television advertisements and Restore Our Future, a super PAC that supports him, spent an additional $2.3 million. Santorum and Red, White and Blue, a super PAC that supports him, countered with about $1 million combined, according to information on file with the Federal Election Commission.

There were primaries in Virginia, Vermont, Ohio, Massachusetts, Georgia, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Caucuses in North Dakota, Idaho and Alaska rounded out the contests. In all, 419 delegates were at stake across the 10 states. Romney picked up at least 212 delegates during the night; Santorum got 84, Gingrich 72 and Paul at least 22.

That gave the former Massachusetts governor 415, more than all his rivals combined. Santorum was second with 176 delegates, Gingrich had 105 and Paul had 47. It takes 1,144 delegates to win the nomination at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., this summer.

In interviews across all of the primary states, Republicans said the economy was the top issue and a candidate's ability to defeat Obama was what mattered most as they cast their votes.

Ohio Republicans were sharply divided, according to the popular vote and interviews with voters as they left polling places. Santorum triumphed over Romney among Ohioans with incomes under $100,000, while Romney won among those with six-figure incomes and up. Romney won among working women; Santorum won among women who do not work.

Santorum also was preferred by the half of the electorate that is born-again, while Romney was the favorite among those who were not.

The race moves to contests in Kansas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Alabama, Hawaii, Mississippi and Missouri. Voting in Puerto Rico, Illinois and Louisiana rounds out the nomination schedule for March.

I'll bring the party : Segullah

Posted by Leslie | March 6, 2012 | No Comments

?Really we?d love to have you for dinner? I assured the two guys visiting our ward for a few weeks working on a film project, ?you should know my house is the party house, we always have people over. Don?t worry there is always food and paintings? everywhere it?s kind of crazy?and well we try to be fun? I joked. I am sure they wondered about this lady who accosts them with strange familiarity post sacrament meeting. I will admit it I do love being the party house, the place where you can always come and hangout in an afternoon and catch some fresh baked warm cookies, or quickly get roped into some sort of project. I love being the home where you just happen to?find yourself staying for dinner. I love to be the one to say ?hey, lets have a party ?we can do it at my house?. We have been the?destination for an endless run of baby showers, luncheons, farewells,? family hang outs, and artist studio nights.
Mostly this is?because?to put it simply?really like fun things, I dig a party? any excuse fo rpunch and cookies bring it on.?In fact it seems to be the one thing most days are missing. In fact my personal?goal is to bring a little bit of party wherever I go. This has been a life long trait, I did after all sometimes bring Tupperware containers of cupcakes to pass out to my friends in the halls at high school. And once in college I sewed all these mini stockings and filled them with candy and just went about my december day on campus and then whoever I ran into on campus that day that I knew hey?FREE Candy surprise, the perks of knowing?leslie graff (well it was whyte then)?that day. Because hey who wouldn?t love to have someone just walk up and give them a present. i am all for life involving alot more presents. And in truth they generally dont have to be elaborate. (although i do like those too)

3 weeks ago as I left for a medical mission in Nepal, my suitcase was packed with 5 types of homemade (I know call me team mom) and scrub caps and art cards for the team?I take it upon myself to to be in charge of? 3 world country medical mission party favors. I have also been know to step into the role of love boat cruise director, knocking on people?s doors rounding people up for fun activities. And please by all means, let things have a good story, or a great joke.

The other week I was asked to teach YW on homemaking, one of the point is made to them was the really cool part of being a grown up is the way you get to run the show. Homemaking while it may be perceived to be a laundry list of chores or domestic labors is actually a lot more about creating a personal and family culture. You decide what you want and make it happen. If you want to bake cookies for the whole neighborhood, you get to you, you want to be the friendly ones who invite people over for dinner you can.? Your life is only going to be as much of a party as you want it? to be. If there is one thing in life I remind myself constantly to be it?s more deliberate. It?s easy to get rolling in all the responsibilities and general requirements of life and forget to really make it what we want. It requires thought to really engage our agency in bringing to pass many good things of our own free will.

To me there can always be a little more turn up the music, bring on the people, and break out the food in any situation. I know I should probably be scolded for leaning over on occasion and making a funny joke on the back row in RS, but I just can?t help it. I love to see people smile and I love to make them laugh. Really ten minutes with me and we?ll probably already be buddies and have an inside joke. Twenty minutes and I have probably invited you to my house.
My personal brand of culture involves, being personal, usually making something for people? my form of affection,?lots of words, and usually a little randomness.

What is your personal or family culture?

I would do it. Are you planning on living in the backwoods and holding a job, or going off the grid completely and living off the land? I suggest the former, because you will have to have money to pay taxes and for other items or luxuries such as internet, which if you're anything like most people then that will be difficult to give that up in our day and age.

I think you're thinking positively and that is a good thing. You want to distance yourself from past mistakes that have led to a lesser quality of life for you, a very natural, healthy thing to do. Just don't get so caught up in the thought of running and rebelling from society that you lose touch from reality. Sometimes we must live with our mistakes, and that is for me a lesson hard learned. Just be sure that even if you think you are off the grid and can then do whatever you want, don't be so sure that nobody will be watching you.
